HRC Foundation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Program focuses on promoting individual competencies and collective action, empowering leaders and stakeholders, and building a network of committed leaders in pursuit of eliminating stigma and enriching the college experience for LGBTQ+ students and the entire student body.
HRC Foundation’s HBCU Program established HBCU OUTLOUD Day, a day for HBCU students, administrators, faculty, and staff to reaffirm their commitment to LGBTQ+ equality and celebrate diversity milestones met.
Get Involved!The HRC Foundation is proud to launch an expansion of the Gen-Z sexual health program and introduce the new cohort of the PrEP Ambassador Program. Through our HBCU Program, 11 students will serve as PrEP Peer Educators to eliminate HIV & AIDS-related stigma on HBCU campuses through public education regarding PrEP, HIV testing & treatment.
Our leadership development and advocacy training programs empower LGBTQ+ HBCU students to act as change agents on their campuses and in their communities.
We partnered with The Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions to release ‘Modeling Inclusion: HBCUs and LGBTQ+ Support,” a research brief examining the ground-breaking steps that Historically Black Colleges and Universities are taking to establish LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and practices on their campuses.
College-age Black Americans are disproportionately affected by HIV. The HBCU Program partners with HBCUs to provide administrators and students with information, strategies, and best practices aimed at significantly reducing student risk on campus.
Formerly known as the HBCU Project, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's HBCU Program has expanded to engage administrators, faculty/staff, students and alumni through various initiatives. Since the program’s inception, HRC has established relationships with over 30 HBCUs by providing support to LGBTQ+ and allied students, faculty, and staff who wish to improve LGBTQ+ inclusion on their campuses.
HRCF’s HBCU Program arose out of a need to support LGBTQ+ students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) after two violent, anti-LGBTQ+ incidents occurred at two prominent HBCUs in 2004. Shortly after the incidents, HRCF convened a dynamic group of HBCU LGBTQ+ student-leaders committed to advocating for LGBTQ+-inclusion and social justice on campuses and in their communities.
PrEP for Sexual Health
Across the country, we are working with students to increase access to PrEP, an FDA-approved medication that is 99% effective in preventing HIV during sex. Our PrEP ambassadors work to tackle the epidemic at the source to prevent HIV in young people or connect them to care early in their journey of sexual health. Learn more.

We are stripping away the shame and getting sex positive to finally build a generation free of HIV and stigma. With the countless attacks on comprehensive sex education in this country and the loss of a generation to the HIV crisis, we must empower students to prioritize their sexual health. Learn more.
