Wedding & Commitment Ceremony Gifts: Committing to Equality
Travis and Rajesh, shown here at their commitment ceremony, celebrated their special day by encouraging their friends and family to donate to the greatest cause of all — equality.
Because same-sex partners are denied the right to marry in almost every state in the nation, it’s difficult for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender couples to celebrate their weddings or commitment ceremonies without being aware of the inequalities that still exist. However, some of your guests may not know that same-sex couples are denied the more than 1,000 rights the federal government grants to married opposite-sex couples. What better way to educate those closest to you than to encourage them to join the Human Rights Campaign?
For the security of knowing that they are doing their part in the fight for equality, many couples — GLBT and straight alike — are foregoing the tradition of gift registries and matching china by asking their guests to give to HRC. For these couples, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to educate their guests about HRC’s important work in fighting for equal rights for all GLBT people.
Working one-on-one with an HRC membership organizer, each couple asks their guests to join the organization or give one-time gifts to HRC. Either way, the guests will be introduced to an organization that supports the beliefs of the couple they love. HRC will also help the couple craft a personalized message to their guests and a special enclosure card for the invitation.
Give your guests the information they need to make their own commitment to equality. Call HRC’s Membership Department at 800/727-4723 or e-mail us at membership@hrc.org.
