The HRC Global Program works in coordination with the global LGBTQ+ movement through leveraging HRC’s connections with the United States Government, multilateral institutions, and the private sector.

Today, sixty-three countries continue to criminalize consensual same-sex sexual acts and twelve of these countries have jurisdictions in which same-sex relations are punishable by death. Many more countries continue to be dangerous, and even deadly, for LGBTQI+ people even after the implementation of protective laws. And though several countries have made great strides in promoting LGBTQI+ rights – including around decriminalization, legal gender recognition, and marriage equality – many of the organized efforts seeking to roll back the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans are the very same ones promoting anti-LGBTQ+ laws and policies around the globe.

HRC invests in our global alumni network - made up of more than 200 LGBTQ+ leaders from over 100 countries - and convenes spaces for cross-regional and global learnings and strategy sharing, as well as building deeper partnerships with global alumni on sustained advocacy engagement opportunities. HRC Global creates learning platforms for LGBTQ+ leaders to share their expertise on global trends and issues. Our global alumni network is made up of experts on a broad range of topics, including the legal registration of LGBTQ+ organizations, decriminalization, providing services to their communities in difficult environments, the anti-gender movement, and responding to closing civic spaces.

HRC Global engages in advocacy efforts with the United States Government, multilateral institutions, and the private sector to support the calls of global LGBTQ+ leaders in various countries. HRC’s strong relationships and access to the United States Government–both with the administration and with Congress–are leveraged to support global LGBTQ+ advocates in accessing these spaces, where they can share the challenges they are facing on the ground and call for action in response to backsliding.

Global Alumni Network

The Human Rights Campaign’s Global Alumni Network is made up of more than 200 advocates for LGBTQ+ equality from more than 100 countries around the world. Members of our network are leaders in their respective LGBTQ+ communities and work across the spectrum of LGBTQ+ issues. The purpose of the network is for our global partners to stay connected, share their stories, best practices, and to continue their involvement with HRC.
