WASHINGTON – Today the White House announced that Dolores Huerta, a civil rights, workers and women’s advocate, is a 2012 Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient. Huerta co-founded the National Farmworkers Association with labor leader Cesar Chavez in 1962. In 1998, President Clinton awarded her the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights. Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese issued the following statement:
“Dolores Huerta has spent her entire life as a champion of marginalized people. As a leader in the labor and civil rights movements, Dolores has made the lives of hundreds of thousands of people infinitely better. She recognized early that all oppressed people – the nation’s farm workers, women, ethnic minorities, and the LGBT community – share the common goal of a fairer nation. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is an honor Dolores clearly deserves. We are proud to call her an ally in the fight for equality.”
The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
