What’s at Stake in this Election

While our community has made enormous strides in recent years, MAGA bullies have been intent on attacking our relationships and our families.

A wave of legislation and dangerous rhetoric — from statehouses to the halls of Congress — threatens the rights, freedoms and dignity of LGBTQ+ people, women, people of color and millions of other Americans. All the while, the radical, conservative members of the Supreme Court have taken aim at our hard-earned rights. The 2024 election will decide whether we defend and build on our progress and the future of our freedoms.

That’s why the Human Rights Campaign is fighting to ensure those seeking to roll back our rights are defeated at the ballot box this November.

America’s Decision in 2024:
Kamala Harris vs. Donald Trump

HRC has deep appreciation for President Biden’s leadership and decades of pro-equality public service. We owe the Biden-Harris team a debt of gratitude for leading the country out of a state of chaos and constant crisis under former President Trump. When President Biden made the historic decision to exit the presidential race, HRC was proud to stand with him in supporting Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign for president of the United States.

This year, America’s choice for president could not be more clear. Harris has been a dedicated champion for LGBTQ+ equality throughout her career. As San Francisco district attorney, she established a hate crimes unit specifically focused on investigating and prosecuting anti-LGBTQ+ violence. In 2006, Harris held a conference in California that brought together over 100 officials nationwide to strategize against the usage of the so-called "gay and transgender panic defense." In 2010, Harris was elected California attorney general, campaigning on a promise to not defend Prop. 8, the state's ban on same-sex marriage. She kept her promise, refusing to defend the ban during her tenure and officiating some of the nation's first same-sex marriages. As a U.S. senator, she co-sponsored the Equality Act and frequently spoke out against violence targeting transgender women of color.

Joining her in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality is Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, her recently announced running mate. Gov. Walz demonstrated his commitment to equality early on by sponsoring his school’s very first gay-straight alliance student club while teaching history and coaching football. During his time in Congress, he voted to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and introduced legislation to protect LGBTQ+ service members from discrimination in benefits. As governor, he signed an executive order banning conversion therapy in Minnesota.

In stark contrast, convicted felon Donald Trump has already shown that he aims to destroy democracy and divide the country in his quest for power. His running mate, JD Vance, aligns closely with Trump's views, publicly opposing marriage equality and supporting businesses' rights to refuse service to LGBTQ+ customers. Members of Trump's administration also helped author Project 2025, a dangerous agenda threatening LGBTQ+ rights, voting rights, healthcare access and environmental protections.

Harris is a true champion of unity and accountability — and will fight for a country where no one is above the law and “justice for all” means something. As president, Harris will protect and expand the progress made by the Biden-Harris administration, the most pro-equality in history. Some of the historic wins the Biden-Harris administration achieved in just one term include:

  • Passing the Respect for Marriage Act

  • Reversing the ban on transgender Americans serving in the military

  • Reversing the ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood

  • Defending the right to gender-affirming care for transgender youth

  • Strengthening Affordable Care Act protections, including health coverage for LGBTQ+ Americans

Why I volunteer:I’m doing this because my life depends on it. Project 2025 and Agenda 47 need to be stopped before they start. The only way to do this is to educate and engage every eligible voter so they too understand what is at stake and take action to stop it.”

Name: Charles Vought

Meeting motivated Democrats through this work has been inspiring, and I believe we can make a real difference together.”

Name: Mya Figueroa

Name: Diana Figueroa
Pronouns: She/her/hers
Location: Tucson, AZ

Why I volunteer: “Being visible creates an opportunity to educate others and a sense of community and support for those who are experiencing similar situations.”

Name: Mark Sundermeier

Candidate Spotlight

HRC is committed to electing trailblazing LGBTQ+ candidates who will help put the U.S. House back in pro-equality hands!

Rep. Julie Johnson (Texas)

In June, HRC was proud to endorse Texas state Rep. Julie Johnson in her bid for Congress to represent Texas’ 32nd congressional district.

Rep. Johnson was first elected in 2018 and was the first legislator in Texas history to serve while married to a spouse of the same gender. Her leadership in Texas has been a game-changer — she has been instrumental in defeating anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and improving bills that would’ve had broad, discriminatory impact on millions of Texans. She is a member of the Texas State House’s first-ever LGBTQ Caucus and a long-serving leadership volunteer with HRC.

Will Rollins (California)

HRC is proud to support Will Rollins in his bid to represent California’s 41st Congressional District in Congress. Rollins is running in a rematch against Republican Rep. Ken Calvert, whom he nearly defeated in an uphill race in 2022.

A former federal prosecutor who focused on counterterrorism and counterintelligence cases, Rollins is running to preserve America’s democracy, take on corruption in Washington and make Congress work again. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Rollins understands firsthand the importance of fighting back against extremist efforts to marginalize LGBTQ+ Americans. Rollins’ opponent voted against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” and the Equality Act. In 1994, Calvert’s allies outed his opponent, future Congressman Mark Takano.

Sarah McBride (Delaware)

History is in the making in Delaware, where state Sen. Sarah McBride is running for U.S. Congress in the state’s at-large congressional district. Sen. McBride, a former national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, is the first openly transgender state senator in American history, and the highest-ranking transgender elected official in American history. HRC is proud to be in the fight to elect Sarah McBride as the first openly transgender member of Congress.

Malcom Kenyatta (Pennsylvania)

HRC is proudly supporting Pennsylvania state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta in his bid for auditor general. A longtime organizer and advocate in Pennsylvania, Rep. Kenyatta in 2018 became the first openly LGBTQ+ person of color to win a seat in the Pennsylvania Legislature. He has fought for workers' rights, to enact gun safety policies, and has a strong focus on combating government corruption and waste. He has held multiple legislative leadership roles: member of the powerful state Government Committee with oversight on state agencies and elections, minority chair of the Subcommittee on Campaign Finance and Elections, minority chair of automation and technology in the Committee on Commerce, and a member of the Finance Committee. He served on former Gov. Tom Wolf’s Suicide Prevention Task Force, and he has been a member of the Philadelphia Delegation leadership team.
