A New Era of Equality: Our Path Forward for LGBTQ+ Rights

by Kelley Robinson

At the heart of the Human Rights Campaign lies a vision both simple in its essence and revolutionary in its impact: to forge a world where equality is not just an aspiration, but a lived reality for every member of our diverse LGBTQ+ family. We believe that everyone, regardless of who they love or how they identify, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

We’re committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression, can thrive in their communities. We’re building a world where LGBTQ+ people can be safe, celebrated, and joyful in all aspects of our lives. And we’re facing the most critical election in recent memory.

How we meet this moment of challenge will depend on where and how we show up to carry the movement for equality forward to victory. To champion LGBTQ+ rights, we will center on equality and liberation for all. Period. Without Exception. This includes trans justice, racial justice, reproductive justice, and a whole lot more. We are building a movement that is truly inclusive in its representation and its impact, and it will strengthen our democracy.

I’ve had the privilege of traveling this nation to various cities, connecting with activists, community leaders, and others from our movement. I’ve listened to their stories of steadfast determination, resilience, and unwavering compassion. We are working to shift the momentum and effect a fundamental change. It is a journey that spans generations, demanding our grit and faith in a better tomorrow.

As we face challenges like Project 2025 and anti-trans legislation, our unity and resolve are more important than ever. Project 2025 wants to enforce a national ban on healthcare, from abortion access to healthcare for transgender folks. They want to target our lifesaving care for Americans of all ages across this country. They’re calling for plans that outlaw transgender people’s right to exist. They want to redefine families to exclude people who love like me. They want to attack our relationships and our kids, they want to attack our right to be recognized at all.

They are coming after our fundamental right to exist, and it doesn’t stop there. We have to confront the threats to our freedom, our rights, and our existence, and we will, with unwavering determination and collective strength. In moments like this, we’re not without hope and we are certainly not without power.

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind. It’s in times of uncertainty that we have to remind ourselves who we are and what we are fighting for. We are fighting for a world where every lesbian, gay, bi, queer, and trans person can live openly, can love freely, and can thrive without fear. We’re fighting for a world where our identities are celebrated, not merely tolerated. We are fighting for a world where our families are recognized and protected, and where our youth grow up knowing they are valued and supported.

I stand for the rainbow, I stand for the rain.”

James Davis

These words from the great James Davis capture the duality of our struggle - joy and grief, hope and despair. We must acknowledge the difficulties we’ve faced while embracing the hope and possibilities that lie ahead. The road ahead may be challenging, but with each step, we move closer to a world where everyone can thrive.

We’re calling on everyone to get involved. Let’s show up, make our voices heard, and work together to ensure that equality wins. This moment is a chance to redefine what’s possible and forge a path towards a more just and inclusive world. Together, we can make this vision a reality.

How will you SHOW UP?

It all starts now, with you. Take the pledge, and let's win this together.
