HRC announces “Unite for Equality Live”; Celebrating Bisexual Visibility Day

HRC ANNOUNCES “UNITE FOR EQUALITY LIVE” NATIONAL EVENT, FEATURING REMARKS FROM VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN:

The online event will take place this Thursday at 8 pm ET. It will feature remarks from Vice President Joe Biden (@JoeBiden), HRC President Alphonso David (@alphonsodavid), Annette Bening, Tituss Burgess (@Instatituss), Naomi Campbell (@NaomiCampbell), Melissa Etheridge (@metheridge), Dominique Jackson (@tyraaross), Justice Smith (@standup4justice) and more.

  • Said David: “We all must unite: for equality, for our democracy, for one another. ‘Unite for Equality Live’ is an opportunity to come together, celebrate our progress, mourn our recent losses, and chart a path forward – a path which must include voting this fall and electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.”

💗💜💙 HRC CELEBRATES BISEXUAL VISIBILITY DAY: Every year on September 23, Bi Visibility Day celebrates bisexual, pansexual, queer and fluid people, and provides an opportunity to lift up our stories and accomplishments. More from HRC.

  • Earlier this week, HRC also released an analysis of the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance data showing that bi+ students are facing additional challenges when compared to lesbian, gay and straight students and demonstrating the urgent need to support bi+ youth. Read more here.

YOUTH MOST VULNERABLE AMONG LGBTQ COMMUNITY IN TERMS OF MENTAL HEALTH: “Given the disproportionately higher rates of mental health challenges and suicide attempts reported by LGBTQ youth, any barriers to mental health care can have enormous consequences. TV NEWS STOPPED COVERING ANTI-TRANS VIOLENCE AFTER PRIDE MONTH: According to research released by Media Matters for America, TV news stations reported on anti-trans violence for a combined total of only 29 minutes in June, which is LGBTQ Pride month, and then failed to report on the topic in July or August. UK GOVERNMENT DROPS GENDER SELF-IDENTIFICATION PLAN FOR TRANS PEOPLE: UK LGBTQ advocacy organization Stonewall (@stonewalluk) condemned the move. Their chief executive Nancy Kelley (@Nancy_M_K) stated: “Today, the UK government has fallen far short on its promise to reform the Gender Recognition Act, and has missed a key opportunity to progress LGBT equality.” More from The Guardian.

BARBADOS PM SLAMS BBC JOURNALIST FOR ASKING IF PEOPLE SHOULD BE “ALLOWED” TO BE GAY: “I think that is a most inappropriate question as to whether a person should be ‘allowed’ to be gay,” said Prime Minister Mia Mottley (@miaamormottley). “I think the question is, should we discriminate against people because they’re gay?
