Following a record-breaking outbreak in Florida, the CDC is urging gay and bisexual men to get the meningococcal vaccine. There have been several cases reported in the state, some of which have involved young people, students, and those living with HIV. This disease often affects men who have sex with men.
USA Today reports that for every 100 people who contract meningococcal disease, 10 to 15 will die. According to the CDC, of those who recover, 1 in 5 could have long-term disabilities such as loss of limbs, brain damage or deafness.
The state’s Department of Health is urging anyone who has been exposed or is showing symptoms, which include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea and vomiting to immediately contact their health provider. Read the full story at USA Today here.
