Today, Kentucky Senators voted 31-3 to pass Senate Bill (SB) 17, a bill that would, among other things, allow student groups at colleges, universities, and high schools to discriminate against LGBTQ students. SB 17 now heads to the House chamber for a vote before it will be sent to the governor’s desk for his signature or veto.

SB 17 is one of several bills that HRC is tracking in Kentucky and working to oppose with our friends at the Fairness Campaign. The full list of bills we are watching are:

• HB 105 - a license to discriminate bill that would allow individuals, businesses, and taxpayer-funded agencies to cite religion as a legal reason to refuse goods or services to LGBTQ people
• HB 106 and HB 141 - measures seeking to restrict transgender people from using facilities consistent with their gender identity, similar to portions of North Carolina’s HB2
• HB 127 and SB 17, bills that would, among other things, allow groups at colleges, universities, & high schools to discriminate against LGBTQ students and still receive federal funding.
