We are outraged that the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and 50 years of precedent — and in doing so, they went against the will of 80% of the American people.
13 states have already passed bans that are being triggered into law in a rolling cascade of devastation. 36 million women as well as non-binary people and transgender men will be affected by these bans alone.
With the stunning and outrageous Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, six radical justices proved just how grossly out of step with the American people they are on abortion care and reproductive rights.
Women are under attack. LGBTQ+ people are under attack. And we won’t stand by and let our rights be rolled back.
Human Rights Campaign staff and volunteers have been rallying and protesting against the Dobbs decision across the country and working with coalition partners to fight the roll-back of abortion rights at the state and federal levels.
IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Abortion is still legal in many states, but this is still a dangerous and unprecedented moment which will have an immediate impact on all of us. Abortion care, access to contraception, access to hormone therapy and access to fertility services like in vitro fertilization (IVF) that many in our community rely upon are in jeopardy. We know that this decision further harms communities that are already facing a lack of access to care — particularly Black people and other communities of color.
This attack on abortion access is part of the legislative onslaught by anti-equality lawmakers who are determined to dictate what we can and cannot say, learn, teach and believe. It is an attack on who we can and cannot be. This is a moment of crisis for our community and our democracy.
Since the Supreme Court is willing to overturn 50 years of precedent by overturning Roe, all of our constitutional rights are on the line.
GRISWOLD, LAWRENCE & OBERGEFELL
In his concurring opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas invited challenges to our rights at the Supreme Court. Right-wing extremists will now be emboldened to come after our rights to contraception (Griswold v. Connecticut), consensual same-sex intimacy (Lawrence v. Texas) and marriage equality (Obergefell v. Hodges). They will chip away at our rights as they did for generations with Roe. It’s despicable, and we cannot let them succeed!
WHAT YOU CAN DO
These are dark times, and we need your help. We urge you to join HRC and turn your outrage into action.
We must fight back together and make our voices heard — we refuse to let a small group of radicals dictate control over our healthcare, family planning, bodily autonomy and ultimately the right to make decisions about our own futures.
