The House of Representatives will vote on an amendment today that would prohibit transition-related care for service members and their families in all military health care programs – threatening the civil rights and wellbeing of thousands of transgender military personnel across the nation.
Here’s what you can do right now to stop this: contact your Representative ASAP and urge them to vote NO on the Hartzler Amendment. All you have to do is text “OUR TROOPS” to 30644 and we’ll connect you to their office so you can tell them to support transgender service members.
With all of the challenges facing our country, from ensuring quality affordable health care to combating the threat from ISIS, the House of Representatives is prioritizing blocking courageous service members from medically necessary health care. We can’t let them. Our brave men and women are counting on us to have their back no matter their gender identity, sex or sexual orientation.
The sponsor of the amendment, anti-LGBTQ Representative Vicky Hartzler (R-MO), thinks it's not "fair to recruit our sons and daughters to fight for our nation...subjecting them to disturbing distractions of very personal privacy issues involving sleeping and showering with individuals born of the opposite sex."
Let us be clear, transgender service members are not “disturbing distractions.” They are heroes who put their lives on the line to protect our country and promote security around the globe. And what’s “not fair” is withholding medically necessary health care from an individual because of who they are.
We need you to get your representative on the line right now and ask them whether they agree with Rep. Hartzler or stand with the more than 15,000 transgender military personnel currently serving our country. Simply text “OUR TROOPS” to 30644 and urge your representative to vote against the amendment.
