WASHINGTON – Today the Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – announced the endorsement of state Senator Emily Cain for election to the U.S. House in Maine’s 2nd district. Cain has a stellar record on LGBT equality.
“Emily Cain is a proven leader who will be a strong advocate for equality in Congress,” said Marty Rouse, HRC national field director. “She will stand up for all Americans and ensure that all of her constituents are accepted and welcomed as part of the American family.”
“Earning HRC's endorsement means the world to me," said Cain. "I am proud to have always been an ally and voice for equality here in Maine, and I will be there every time in Congress. Equality and justice are core values for Maine people, and I am proud that I have never wavered in my support and work to expand both under the law. While we have made huge progress in Maine, there is still a ton of work to do at the national level. In Congress, I will continue to defend equality and justice just as I have done in Augusta.”
Cain has been a longtime and strong supporter of LGBT equality in the Maine legislature. Cain has vowed to work for full equality, including her support for the Respect for Marriage Act (RMA) which would repeal the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in its entirety, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and other key legislation.
The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
