Tonight, Human Rights Campaign (HRC)-endorsed Sen. Gary Peters won re-election to the U.S. Senate defeating anti-equality candidate John James.
Peters is a co-sponsor of the Equality Act, crucial federal legislation that would finally guarantee explicit protections for LGBTQ people under our nation's existing civil rights laws.
“Michiganders have made their voices heard and united for equality by re-electing pro-equality champion Gary Peters,” said Human Rights Campaign President Alphonso David. “In the most consequential election of our lifetimes, the Human Rights Campaign organized more than one million Equality Voters across the state to help Gary Peters across the finish line. And after an onslaught of anti-LGBTQ misinformation by a certified hate group, the American Principles Project, voters clearly embraced a more equal, more inclusive future.”
In September, American Principles Project announced a digital ad buy in Michigan with a series of three ads blatantly lying about the Equality Act and targeting the transgender community. At the time, HRC called upon Facebook, Twitter and other platforms to take down the ads or label them as misinformation. Afterward, Facebook added a “Fact Check” to the advertisement after Politifact issued a fact check on the advertisements.
