“Roy Moore keeps getting fired from jobs yet he continues to ask the people of Alabama for a promotion. Despite being removed from office twice for ethical violations, Roy Moore has succeeded in becoming the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate,” said Eva Kendrick, HRC Alabama state director. “Given Roy Moore’s track record of flouting laws and attacking the civil rights of LGBTQ people across our state, we already know he won’t stand up for all Alabamians when it matters most. In the run up to December 12, we urge every fair-minded person across Alabama to say #NoMoore and reject the politics of bigotry and hate.”

During the primary contest, HRC PAC launched ads opposing the candidacies of both Luther Strange and Roy Moore alongside a direct mail campaign. HRC opposed both candidates whose race represented a choice between “bad” and “worse” for Alabama.

In 2016, HRC Alabama initiated the #NoMoore campaign to remove Moore from the Alabama Supreme Court for refusing to implement a ruling that brought marriage equality to Alabama. Following a review by the Alabama Judicial Inquiry Committee, Moore was suspended from the bench without pay for his actions -- the second time that he was removed from that position for disobeying legal and ethical standards. Despite his assertion that he was only opposing marriage equality as a legal matter, his subsequent comments about the LGBTQ community have revealed a deep, underlying animus toward LGBTQ Alabamians. Recently, he took his extremism one step further by saying that he and Vladimir Putin may be “more akin... than [he] knows,” specifically citing both of their views on LGBTQ rights. Moore’s past is full of anti-LGBTQ comments and actions, and it is clear that this will not change if he is elected to the U.S. Senate.

In 2014, HRC launched Project One America, an initiative geared towards advancing social, institutional and legal equality in Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi. HRC Alabama continues to work to advance equality for LGBTQ Alabamians who have no statewide protections in housing, workplace, or public accommodations; or legal state recognition for their relationships and families.
