DETROIT -- Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of Andy Levin for U.S. House of Representatives in Michigan’s 9th Congressional District.
“Andy Levin is a champion of equality who will fight for all of Michigan’s hard-working families,” said HRC Michigan State Director Amritha Venkataraman. “The Human Rights Campaign is proud to endorse his candidacy and will work hard to mobilize and organize Michigan’s 1.1 million Equality Voters to ensure he is elected in November. We look forward to working with Andy Levin to pass the Equality Act and secure full federal equality for all Americans when he is sworn into the U.S. House.”
Said Levin, “We have to defend the human rights of every person. That is not negotiable. In Congress, I will work to bar discrimination against LGBT+ people on all fronts – housing, employment, public accommodation, banking, adoption, and more.”
A longtime activist both at home and abroad, Levin experienced personal tragedy when a close friend died from AIDS related complications in 1990. He went on to publish an article in the Williams Alumni Review calling for an end to the stigmatization of people living with HIV and eventually served on the board of the Michigan AIDS Coalition. Levin will a be passionate champion for equality whose support for the Equality Act — federal legislation to finally add comprehensive LGBTQ non-discrimination protections to our nation’s civil rights laws — will be crucial to advancing the legislation through Congress, ensuring all Michiganders are protected.
In Michigan, HRC has identified more than 1.1 million voters as likely “Equality Voters,” meaning they are strong supporters of progressive LGBTQ policies including marriage equality, equitable family law, and laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Michigan in the 2018 cycle, and has staff and resources on the ground in the state as part of the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.
The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
