DETROIT-- Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of Haley Stevens in her bid to represent Michigan’s 11th Congressional District.
“Haley Stevens will be the champion for equality Michigan’s 11th Congressional District deserves, and the Human Rights Campaign is proud to endorse her candidacy,” said HRC Michigan State Director Amritha Venkataraman. “We will work to mobilize and organize tens of thousands of “Equality Voters” in the district to ensure she is elected in November, and we look forward to working with her to pass the Equality Act and secure full federal equality for all Americans when she is sworn into the U.S. House.”
“As a lifelong friend of the LGBTQ community, I know we have made progress toward equality at the federal level, but we still have work to do,” said Stevens. “Right here in Michigan, the LGBTQ community is still waiting for full legal protections. In Congress, I will work with advocates to pass the Equality Act and ensure the LGBTQ community is protected.”
Born and raised in Oakland County, Haley Stevens has dedicated her career to improving the lives of Michigan’s working families. During her time on the Auto Task Force of the U.S. Treasury Department, Stevens played a key role in creating new jobs and saving more than 200,000 Michigan jobs following the Great Recession. A lifelong ally to the LGBTQ community, she will be an advocate in the fight for full equality. Stevens is a strong supporter of marriage equality and the Equality Act, important federal legislation that would finally guarantee explicit, comprehensive non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people under our nation’s civil rights laws.
In Michigan, HRC has identified more than 1.1 million Michiganders as likely “Equality Voters” -- voters who support LGBTQ-inclusive policies. HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Michigan in the 2018 cycle, and has staff and resources on the ground in the state as part of the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.
The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
