WASHINGTON — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of Jennifer Wexton for U.S. Congress. Wexton, a Democrat Virginia state senator and attorney, is vying to replace Republican U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Comstock to represent the people of Northern Virginia’s 10th District — a race Politico identified as one of the top 10 House races to watch in 2018.
“Jennifer Wexton is a proven leader who will stand up in the U.S. Congress for Virginia’s working families and help pull the emergency brakes on the Trump-Pence administration’s reckless agenda,” said JoDee Winterhof, HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs. “In the Virginia General Assembly, Jennifer Wexton worked tirelessly to advance fairness and equality for all. HRC is proud to endorse her bid to represent the people of Northern Virginia’s 10th District in Congress, and we look forward to working closely with her to move LGBTQ equality forward.”
“It has been my privilege to fight alongside HRC in the General Assembly towards greater equality for all Virginians,” said Jennifer Wexton. “With the recent attacks on civil liberties emanating from the White House, it’s more important than ever that we rededicate ourselves to ensuring equality for all people under the law. I am honored to have earned the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign.”
Jennifer Wexton has a proven commitment to LGBTQ equality. In the Virginia General Assembly, Wexton repeatedly championed state legislation to prohibit discrimination against LGBTQ people and their families. She has supported bills to expand Virginia’s hate crimes statute to include the LGBTQ community and protect LGBTQ youth from the dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy. She has also opposed harmful anti-LGBTQ legislation in Virginia that would have allowed government officials to refuse to marry same-sex couples, discriminatory legislation targeting transgender people, and numerous other attempts to treat the LGBTQ community as second-class citizens.
In contrast to Wexton’s commitment to LGBTQ equality, Congresswoman Barbara Comstock earned an abysmal score of zero on the HRC Congressional Scorecard.
The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
