WASHINGTON – Last night, anti-equality politician Tim Sheehy won Montana’s Republican U.S. Senate primary. Sheehy is a self-serving and radical politician who has a pattern of exaggerating and lying about his biography and background. He will say and do anything to get elected–including spreading hateful rhetoric about LGBTQ+ Montanans and embracing policies that threaten LGBTQ+ Americans:
Sheehy has a history of inappropriate and bigoted social media activity, including posting “lewd photos of women, racist costumes, and homoerotic jokes.” [Insider, 7/11/23]
In a survey commissioned by a Super PAC supporting Sheehy, three gender options were given - “male,” “working woman,” and “homemaker,” in a particularly egregious and offensive display of his regressive views towards his own constituents. [The 19th, 1/25/24]
Rather than focus on issues that actually matter to Montana’s parents and their school-age children, Sheehy highlighted “drag queen story time” as one of his top educational issues behind his decision to run – and called for prayer in schools alongside the pledge of allegiance. [Tim for MT, Issues, 3/22/24]
Sheehy touts his endorsement from former president Donald Trump, a 34-time convicted felon whose candidacy for president threatens to roll back decades of progress towards LGBTQ+ equality. [Tim for MT, Endorsements, 3/22/24]
Sheehy is vehemently opposed to Montanans’ reproductive freedoms; he is endorsed by Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, which has made support for a national abortion ban a litmus test for its endorsees. [Washington Post, 5/1/23]
HRC’s Equality Votes PAC will be mobilizing the more than 130,000 Montana Equality Voters–voters modeled to prioritize LGBTQ+ equality when making their voting decisions–from now until November to ensure they know about Sheehy’s dangerous beliefs and understand what’s at stake for LGBTQ+ people in Montana and across the country.
