Human Rights Campaign Foundation Awards 18 International Advocacy Groups Its 2024 Global Small Grants

by Kathryn Smith

Today, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRCF), the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, announced the 18 organizations awarded with Global Small Grants as an initiative of HRCF’s Global Program. These grants are once again possible through the generous support of ADM. The grant recipients this cycle each receive up to $5,000 and are all working to advance the rights of LGBTQ+ people in their communities through bold and creative strategies that drive political and societal change.

Priorities for grant funding this year included projects centering LGBTQI+ people who are racial, religious or ethnic minorities, have a disability, communities disproportionately impacted by climate change, or who have experienced displacement. Additionally, HRCF sought to assist programs working to focus on increasing trans and/or intersex leadership or advocacy and those generally creating more inclusive access to services or other institutions of daily life, including engaging employers/businesses or faith institutions as allies for equality.

For the past five years, the Global Small Grants program has provided critical funding opportunities for organizations across the world looking to better the lives of LGBTQ+ people. We look forward to continuing our support for the incredible work that each of these programs are doing, particularly as many countries throughout the world face hostile sentiments for LGBTQ+ people.

This year’s awardees include: LighT (Central Asia), Más Igualdad Perú (Perú), Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality (ECADE) (Saint Lucia), XY Spectrum (Serbia), Lesbian Intersex Trans and other Extensions (LITE) (Malawi), Right Side Human Rights Defender NGO (Armenia), Blue Diamond Society (Nepal), Barbados LGBTQ+ Coalition (Barbados), Sin Etiquetas +593 (Ecuador), ICEBREAKERS UGANDA (Uganda), EQUAL GROUND (Sri Lanka), Equal Asia Foundation (Thailand), Taiwan Tongzhi (LGBTQ+) Hotline Association (Taiwan), Key Watch Ghana / Intersex Movement Ghana (Ghana), South Trans Voice (Morocco). There are three additional organizations who were awarded but wish to remain anonymous for security purposes.

Among the countries represented, eight have a same-sex criminalization statute, where it is still illegal to engage in consensual same-sex sexual relations. In many others, openly identifying as LGBTQ+ can lead to ostracization, discrimination, and violence. For this reason, some grantees have chosen to remain anonymous.

Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has ignited our quest to Reimagine Gender Affirming Care and Transgender Human Rights in our country. Our resolve remains unwavering, transgender lives matter, dignity is universal, and love conquers hate. We rise and resist being subdued. We shall not stop until our chains are completely broken.
