Today, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Mahmoud v. Taylor, a case on the right for every student to receive an inclusive education–including stories that feature LGBTQ+ students and families.
Statement from HRC Foundation President, Kelley Robinson:
“LGBTQ+ stories matter. They matter so students can see themselves and their families in the books they read–so they can know they’re not alone. And they matter for all students who need to learn about the world around them and understand that while we may all be different, we all deserve to be valued and loved. All students lose when we limit what they can learn, what they can read, and what their teachers can say. The Supreme Court should reject this attempt to silence our educators and ban our stories.”
Earlier this year, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRCF), the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, marked the tenth anniversary of its Welcoming Schools National Day of Reading, a day for thousands of students, educators, parents, caregivers, and allies to join in solidarity with transgender and non-binary students.
