Nevada’s U.S. Senate race key to expanding pro-equality majority in the chamber

WASHINGTON — Today the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) PAC, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of Jacky Rosen for re-election to the U.S. Senate representing Nevada, a key battleground state in this year’s presidential election. Rosen, who has a track record of successfully unseating Republican incumbents and delivering significant results in Congress on a bipartisan basis, has also proven herself as a fierce defender of equality and reproductive freedom while fighting back against MAGA extremism in Washington.

HRC President Kelley Robinson and Senator Rosen will jointly hold an endorsement event this afternoon, calling attention to the stakes of this year’s election and the importance of maintaining a pro-equality majority in Congress.

As MAGA forces aim to slip a convicted felon into the White House and seize control of a Senate majority, sending Senator Rosen back to Washington is an urgent priority,” said HRC President Kelley Robinson. “From successfully fighting back against anti-LGBTQ+ amendments in must-pass funding legislation, to helping the Respect for Marriage Act become law, she has shown up for our community at a time when we need champions in Congress more than ever. We look forward to mobilizing our coalition of allied organizations, getting Equality Voters to the ballot box, and re-electing Senator Rosen to fight for LGBTQ+ equality, reproductive freedoms, gun violence protections, and all other issues critical to our fight for liberation without exception.”

At a time when attacks on LGBTQ+ individuals are on the rise, it is more important than ever that we all speak up and take action in support of equality and inclusion for our family, friends, neighbors, and loved ones,” said Senator Jacky Rosen. “The Human Rights Campaign is at the forefront of the fight to secure LGBTQ+ rights and push for comprehensive equal rights legislation at the federal level. I’m honored to have HRC’s endorsement in my reelection campaign as we work together to oppose hate and discrimination and stand up for all Nevadans.”

Senator Rosen faces a slate of MAGA-enablers looking to win the seat this November, opponents more interested in currying favor with Donald Trump than addressing the needs of Nevadans. The state has enacted several pieces of pro-LGBTQ+ legislation in recent years.

Rosen began her political career in the U.S. House, representing Nevada’s third congressional district before unseating a Trump-endorsed incumbent in her 2018 Senate race, making her the only Democratic challenger to defeat a GOP incumbent that year. In addition to supporting the Respect for Marriage Act and combating anti-LGBTQ+ attacks, she has been a vocal supporter of abortion rights and bans on assault-style weapons. She has also been a champion for affordable housing and health equity, assisting with efforts to cap the cost of life-saving medications such as insulin.

HRC’s Commitment to Nevada

In May, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) announced a $15 million strategic investment, entitled We Show Up: Equality Wins, to reach Equality Voters through hired staff, field efforts, events, paid advertising, mobilization, and grassroots engagement in key battleground states, including Nevada. HRC has had year-round, on-the-ground staff in these states since 2017, and will bring on dozens of additional staffers in these states to organize for November.

Equality Voters, including the more than 700,000 in Nevada, are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans who are united by the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, they recognize and trust the HRC brand, and they are more likely to identify with issue-specific organizations than candidates or political parties. With this endorsement, HRC PAC will work to engage and mobilize Equality Voters in support of Rosen.
