CLEVELAND, OH — Today the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) PAC, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, announced that it is proudly endorsing Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown for re-election to the U.S. Senate. A lifelong Ohioan, Sen. Brown has dedicated his life to fighting for the people of his state and the belief that hard work should pay off for everyone, no matter who you are, where you live, or what kind of work you do.
With this endorsement, HRC will focus on activating local volunteers and turning out the state’s more than 2 million Equality Voters to retain an essential Democratic seat and stave off Trump acolytes.
First elected to the Senate in 2006, Senator Brown has long been a champion for equality. Brown introduced the resolution to recognize June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month to highlight the historical contributions of LGBTQ+ people to affirm the nation’s commitment to the fight for equality. The recipient of a consistently perfect score on HRC’s Congressional Scorecard, Senator Brown has long supported marriage equality and voted for the 2022 Respect for Marriage Act. Brown also urged the Department of Veterans Affairs to improve data collection for LGBTQ+ veterans so health disparities in LGBTQ+ veteran populations can be identified, analyzed, and addressed. During his service in the House of Representatives, Brown voted against the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act and against the Federal Marriage Amendment, which would have prohibited same sex marriage in every state.
The Senator currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee and has secured groundbreaking workers’ protections that amount to the strongest labor enforcement in American history in a U.S. trade deal. Senator Brown also believes that quality, affordable health care is a right for all Americans. For years, he refused to accept Congressional health insurance until Congress passed the Affordable Care Act, which ensures Ohioans cannot be denied care because of a preexisting condition.
HRC’s Commitment to Ohio
Equality Voters, including the more than 2 million in Ohio, are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans who are united by the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate; they recognize and trust the HRC brand and are more likely to identify with issue-specific organizations than candidates or political parties. HRC will work to mobilize and energize Equality Voters in Ohio to help propel Senator Brown to victory in 2024.
