Human Rights Campaign: Senate Must Ensure Thorough, Fair Trial of Donald Trump

by Charlotte Clymer

WASHINGTON — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, called for the Senate to conduct a fair and thorough trial of Donald Trump in response to news that the House had voted to transmit two articles of impeachment against him.

“This is a nation of laws, built on a promise in the Constitution that no one is above accountability -- especially those elected to serve the American public,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “The Senate’s constitutional role in adjudicating the President’s actions is vital in preserving this accountability. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and all Senators have a duty to ensure this trial is conducted with full transparency and includes all witnesses and presentation of other evidence necessary to undercover the truth. The American people deserve leaders who uphold the rule of law, and that includes the president of the United States.”

On Wednesday, the House voted to transmit the two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Last month, the Human Rights Campaign announced its support for the formal impeachment of Donald Trump. In September, HRC expressed support for a formal inquiry into the alleged corruption of Donald Trump in attempting to force the government of Ukraine to investigate a chief political rival by withholding foreign aid that had already been approved by Congress.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work, and in every community.
