Washington, D.C. — On Saturday, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC) and Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) celebrated and honored leaders in the fight for social justice at a jointly hosted event during this year’s Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference. As our rights and freedoms face an unprecedented tidal wave of threats, the awards brunch focused on the “Collective Joy and Resilience” of the reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights movements.
This year’s honorees included Leslie Jones, Entertainer of the Year, Imara Jones, Advocate of the Year, and Planned Parenthood’s Generation Action Chapter at Alabama A&M University and Erica McPheeters of Kentucky State University, HBCU Youth Champions. Planned Parenthood also recognized the Honorable Representative Marilyn Strickland (WA 10th District), recipient of the Congressional Champion of Reproductive Health.
Our fights for freedom are not separate battles; they are one. We're all implicated when any one of us is oppressed, and we're all liberated when any one of us is free. These honorees understand that, and we are proud to recognize their relentless fight for our collective liberation. Progress isn't just possible; it's inevitable. And it’s happening because of champions like these.”
There’s no question that it’s a challenging time, but I can’t help but be incredibly hopeful about our fight for liberation. We’re in the same fight for control over our bodies, our decisions, and our destinies. Our fates are interlocked, our joy is intertwined, and our resilience relies on us being in lock step across our movements.”
Hundreds were in attendance at the sold-out event, underscoring the powerful coalition fighting for justice and equality across the country.
