WASHINGTON - The Rhode Island Speaker of the House announced he will not support marriage equality and instead favors civil union legislation. Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, issued this statement.
"We are disappointed that marriage equality legislation is not moving ahead in Rhode Island. Loving, committed gay and lesbian couples in the state deserve the freedom to marry. We look forward to continuing to work with our partners in the state, including Marriage Equality Rhode Island and Speaker Gordon Fox, to pass marriage equality in the Ocean State."
The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
