WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization responded to news that Vice President Mike Pence’s will speak on Saturday at Hillsdale College, which has one of the worst reputations in the country for the welfare of LGBTQ students. Hillsdale College has been consistently rated by the Princeton Review as one of the worst colleges in the country for LGBTQ students. In 2015, an official at the college made national headlines when they sent an institution-wide e-mail asking faculty, students, athletic staff, and alumni to pray that “evil be revealed and destroyed” in regards to same-sex marriage in the United States.
“It tells you a lot about who Mike Pence really is that he’s elevating and celebrating an institution like Hillsdale College, with its troubling history of rejecting its LGBTQ students,” said HRC Government Affairs Director David Stacy. “The college is consistently ranked among the worst for LGBTQ students and has been openly hostile to LGBTQ people. It tells you a lot about who Mike Pence really is that he is elevating and celebrating an institution like Hillsdale."
The Human Rights Campaign recently released a report -- “The Real Mike Pence” -- detailing Pence’s history of attacking LGBTQ people in an effort to expose his dangerous record to the world. The report is accompanied by a site that highlights the most egregious anti-LGBTQ stains of his past. Pence has a long track record of attacking LGBTQ people, from supporting a constitutional amendment to ban marriage equality, to opposing the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and federal hate crimes legislation, to driving forward the administration’s despicable ban on transgender service members, which is now being litigated in the courts.
The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work, and in every community.
