The Human Rights Campaign Applauds Most LGBTQ Inclusive Inaugural Prayer Service in U.S. History

by Aryn Fields

The Human Rights Campaign responded to news from the Presidential Inaugural Committee and Washington National Cathedral that the Virtual Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service on Thursday, January 21 will include two transgender faith leaders and other notable LGBTQ faith leaders.

“President-elect Biden’s commitment to inclusion and mirroring the true image of America in the new administration shines through powerfully in this historic, LGBTQ inclusive, prayer service. This service reflects a critical change in tone away from the cynical use of religion and faith as weapons of division against the LGBTQ community, and instead towards tools of service in the work of justice and inclusion. Elevating the voices of LGBTQ faith leaders sends a strong message to the LGBTQ community — that we are integral parts of faith communities, and that our continued advocacy for equity is crucial for the work of healing the soul of America.”

Alphonso David, Human Rights Campaign President

In a historic move, two transgender faith leaders will participate in the Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service:

  • Rev. Dr. Paula Stone Williams, Author and Pastor, Left Hand Church and;
  • Barbara Satin, Faith Work Director, The National LGBTQ Task Force.

The prayer service will also include other trailblazing LGBTQ faith leaders:

  • Rev. Fred Davie, Executive Vice President, Union Theological Seminary;
  • Rev. Dr. Yvette Flunder, Presiding Bishop, The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries and;
  • Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, Senior Rabbi, Congregation Beit Simchat Torah;

The dynamic program, which will be the most LGBTQ inclusive inaugural prayer service in history, will include prayers, readings, blessings, and hymns from interfaith leaders, celebrated artists, and other inspiring voices.
