The Human Rights Campaign Supports the Impeachment of President Donald Trump

by Charlotte Clymer

WASHINGTON — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, announced its support for the formal impeachment of Donald Trump. Ahead of the full floor vote in the U.S. House, HRC calls upon members of Congress to carry out their duty of serving the American public and protecting the integrity of the Constitution.

HRC President Alphonso David said:

The United States of America is a nation of laws, built upon the Constitutional promise that no one is beyond accountability -- especially those elected to serve the American public. Donald Trump has proven time and again that he believes he is above the law and not beholden to the United States Constitution. Trump’s ongoing efforts to undermine the 2020 election by soliciting foreign interference is unacceptable, deeply dangerous and an affront to the fundamental democratic principle of free and fair elections. Because of these troubling facts, the Human Rights Campaign supports the impeachment of Donald Trump. The impeachment process is a constitutionally guaranteed process for preserving accountability and the integrity of our democracy. Now, Congress must ensure a conclusion consistent with law.

The House Intelligence, Judiciary and other committees have uncovered clear and convincing evidence that Donald Trump abused his power to pressure the government of Ukraine to announce an investigation into his political rival. The facts presented by some of our nation’s most respected civil servants are unrefuted by any evidence or testimony. Furthermore, the White House has blocked witnesses and evidence.

On September 27, the Human Rights Campaign endorsed a formal impeachment inquiry announced by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work, and in every community.
