Transgender Day of Visibility: Honoring Trans Heroes and Sharing Stories of Resilience

HRC uplifts stories of trans joy and rallies allies to underscore the significance of Trans Day of Visibility amidst political attacks on the transgender and gender non-conforming community

WASHINGTON – Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, honors Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV) by celebrating the contributions of the transgender and gender expansive community while also acknowledging the systemic challenges still facing our trans siblings. By building coalitions to embolden young queer leaders to act as changemakers for trans issues on their college campuses and establishing meaningful engagement with allies both in-person and digitally, HRC is reaffirming its commitment to shining a light on trans joy.

“Transgender Day of Visibility is a day to celebrate the courage, tenacity and diversity of the transgender and gender expansive,” said Human Rights Campaign Director of Strategic Outreach and Training Tori Cooper. “Even as we face unprecedented political assaults designed to silence us, strip away our healthcare, deny our presence in schools, workplaces and military service – we fight forward. These divisions are put in place to explicitly harm our community and create barriers for transgender and gender expansive people just trying to live our lives. But our community has never and will never be defined by those who try to bring us down. Today, and every day, we must continue uplifting the voices of those who are often silenced and share stories of trans joy to inspire action and build a world where everyone feels seen, respected, and valued.”

With the relentless political attacks from the current administration, this year's TDOV takes on even greater significance by serving as a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and the importance of standing in solidarity with the transgender and gender expansive community. Since January, the Trump Administration has taken a slew of executive actions targeting the transgender and gender expansive, including attempting to restrict access to medically-necessary care, attempting to fire qualified, trained military servicemembers, targeting schools that support transgender youth, upending access to accurate federal identity documents for the community, and more.

"On this Trans Day of Visibility, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of the transgender and gender expansive community. Amplifying the voices of transgender and gender expansive folks is essential not only to counter the harmful rhetoric permeating the current political climate but also to foster empathy, combat misinformation, and build greater understanding,” said Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson. “The coordinated attacks on transgender rights represent a direct threat to the well-being of transgender and gender expansive people everywhere—a reality that demands immediate and decisive action. We will not falter in our fight against anti-equality policies, nor will we falter in seeking justice and uplifting the extraordinary spirit of the transgender and gender expansive community.”
