Trump’s Latest Power Grab Threatens Free Expression and LGBTQ+ Voices in Smithsonian Institutions

by Jared Todd

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In another attack on LGBTQ+ people, history and voices, the Trump Administration yesterday issued an executive order on the Smithsonian and free expression. The administration aims to expunge what they deem “anti-American ideology” from storied institutions whose very mission it is to house unadulterated presentations of cultures, histories and stories from the proudly diverse population that makes up our great nation. Adding to Trump’s senseless attacks on transgender lives, the order also bans any mention of trangender women in the new American Women’s History Museum. The order directs Vice President JD Vance, who has a history of anti-LGBTQ+ animus, to “eliminate what he finds ‘improper’ from the Smithsonian Institution, including its museums, education and research centers, and the National Zoo."

Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson issued the following statement:

“Queer art is American art. Queer history is American history. But instead of focusing on issues that are critical to the American people, the Trump Administration is hellbent on quashing any artistic expression or history that doesn’t fit their definition of ‘American.’ This is what fascism looks like. It’s a disgrace and a slap in the face to LGBTQ+ people of all backgrounds. A reminder for Trump and Vance: trans women are indeed women and deserve to have their stories told.

Openly gay artist Keith Haring once said that ‘Art should be something that liberates your soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further.’ This administration is scared of a country working together to uphold liberty and imagination through artistic expression and accurate history, becoming more inclusive and understanding of the diversity that makes us such a strong country in the first place. The government has no place engaging in censorship.”

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work, and in every community.
