Amid increased attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, and particularly the transgender community, the Human Rights Campaign declared a state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people in the United States in June 2023.
We have witnessed a surge of extremist campaigns against businesses advocating for our community and those LGBTQ+ creators who partner with them. Creators using their platforms to showcase the beauty and resilience of our community are being targeted simply for existing in spaces where we have always existed. Now is not a moment to shy away from showcasing LGBTQ+ creators, but a moment to show up more than ever before.
Showcasing queer talent and telling our stories does not fall squarely on the shoulders of LGBTQ+ creators. It also requires a commitment by businesses to empower creators with the resources, tools, and support necessary to thrive. Creators should feel like a true partner to the businesses they engage with, knowing that they are supported, full stop.
Moving forward, HRC will grow its library of resources to support LGBTQ+ creators so they can be agents of change when working with brands. Through this work, we will seek to close the ally gap by providing creators with the tools they need to show up for the LGBTQ+ community and foster meaningful partnerships with businesses.
We’ve prepared this resource for transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming creators to provide helpful tips and questions to consider when discussing a brand partnership.
