Supporting Transgender, Non-binary, and Gender-Expansive Children

Produced by the HRC Foundation

Supporting Transgender, Non-binary, and Gender-Expansive Children is a groundbreaking resource that explains how families and healthcare professionals are helping transgender children thrive.

First released in 2016, the updated version for 2024 focuses on providing resources, information, and calls to action that both reflect the current moment, and are grounded in the most recent data available.

It is increasingly challenging for parents of trans, non-binary or gender expansive children to find credible information and resources to help guide them. Even with the decades of evidence-based gender-affirming models to draw from, and hundreds of first-person accounts from parents—and young trans people, that make clear the importance of affirming and supporting trans youth, there is an equal amount of misinformation and disinformation to contend with.

In our recent survey of parents of trans youth, the vast majority report that they are accepting of their child’s gender identity, but have found it difficult to find the resources and support they need in order to do their best at navigating this journey in the most helpful way.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council, and our Research and Public Education team have teamed up to meet the needs of parents and other caregivers—especially those who are just beginning to understand their child’s gender.

Below you can find our most recent guide for parents, Supporting Transgender, Non-binary, and Gender-Expansive Children, and the executive summary of findings from our survey of parents of trans, non-binary and gender expansive children.
